The Rules of Hockey Overtime
  1. First goal wins, and you keep playing until that goal is scored. Doesn't matter how long it takes.

  2. If you're a true fan of hockey, and you tune into a game that goes into overtime, you have to watch until that goal is scored. Doesn't matter how long it takes.

I just watched SJ get eliminated by Dallas in a 4OT monster. Whew. Now we've got Dallas/Detroit and Philly/Pittsburgh. I'm hoping for a Detroit / Pittsburgh final for the sheer entertainment value... which means we'll probably end up with Dallas/Philly. (8-) All that being said, even Dallas and Philly would be entertaining, if even there's a little less speed and a little more brute force then I would prefer. Morrow and Briere alone would be worth the price of admission...

One thing I'll say -- this has been a very entertaining playoffs. Even the low scoring games have had plenty of chances, the goalies have just stood on their heads. I can't even think of a game that was a complete snoozer off the top of my head, even though I've only seen maybe parts of a dozen games altogether by this point. Hopefully, the Conference finals and the Stanley Cup finals will be just as entertaining -- it's nice to see speed hockey again.

Gas Tax Redux

You know, it's that "experts are irrelevant, elitist bastards" that got us in trouble with the George W. Bush administration.

And while I wish for an election (any election, any level) to be without silly ideas, it'll never happen. Populism works, which is why people appeal to it, even if the long term results aren't so good. (I can't think of a single country with populist economic policies that work -- but I can think of a whole bunch of bad ones.)
